On Saturday, June 14, 2014 the New Haven Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Epsilon Iota Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and the Yale African American Affinity Group co-sponsored the 4th Annual Community Free Market in New Haven, CT. The Free Market, held at the Elks Lodge of New Haven, provides people the opportunity to select new and used items such as clothing, bicycles, household appliances, and electronics from community donations “free of charge”. When totaled three days before the event, over 1,000 items had been collected by the organizations. Over 300 people attended the Free Market this year, and were able to select from a wide variety of goods which speaks to the events growth and success with donations. The Free Market also featured a health symposium component that provided free screenings of blood pressure and blood sugar, information on the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, and long term care planning information from AARP. In sponsoring the Free Market, New Haven Alumnae and EIIC aim to offset some of the economic challenges facing people day-to-day while providing for their families. Additionally, the healthcare symposium served to bring needed resources and information to those who may not have consistent healthcare providers. Other key supporters of the event were WYBC 94.3 radio, The Elks Lodge of New Haven and various other vendors.
