5K for Prostate Health Awareness – Prevention is Better than Cure
Friday, August 1st, 2014 @ 12:21AM
Battling prostate cancer begins with understanding the risk factors and consulting with health professionals on the options available for screening, diagnosis and treatment – overall it starts with increased awareness. Epsilon Iota Iota Chapter (EIIC) seeks to spur this effort under our Health Initiatives program which advocates for good health practices and healthy families. There is no better champion for this cause than the men of Omega Psi Phi, specifically the EIIC. Our fraternity has over 100,000 members nationwide, and we are committed to making an impact on the health consciousness of our communities and families. Information provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that prostate cancer is the most common cancer occurring amongst men globally. In the USA, African American men have higher rates of getting (1 in 5) and dying (1 in 20) from prostate cancer than men of other racial or ethnic groups across the country. In fact, among the ten leading causes of cancer death in African American men, prostate cancer is second, behind lung cancer. Additionally, when compared to all causes of death, prostate cancer is the fourth leading cause of death among African American men over age forty-five.
We ask that you join us in bringing awareness to this issue and raise support for outreach agencies and those affected by this disease, by participating and/or donating to our “5K for Prostate Health Awareness – Prevention is Better than Cure”.
